I adore hugs although it is challenging when I'm married to someone that is indifferent about it. My son goes between giving me the biggest bear hugs to a pat on the back, although he is a teen so no surprise there. Some people pay for hugs and I can so understand that, there is something special about being held with no strings attached.

I look at any form of touching as a prelude to sex, so handshakes, hugging and heaven forbid kisses are a bit awkward when I'm not desiring sex...

when i was a teen, i was a little bit awkward when it came to hugs. i dont know why because i was bought up in quite an affectionate home. even mums hugs i couldnt really embrace though. maybe it was just a puberty thing idk. once i reached adulthood, i was still a bit the same because i was kinda shy and insecure.. until i started getting a very busy social and work life and also found myself growing extremely empathetic, so over a short amount of time i ended up becoming the hugger of everyone and was more than comfortable with it, so long as i could tell that the person on the other end was going to be ok with it too. the one thing i thought though was that internet hugs were weird and awkward. online friends used to bug me about it :silly: until i started socialising more online. now im fine with it :D
but 2-3 years ago i started developing severe social anxiety so i kind of have to start all over again, in the real world anyway. and not just with hugs, but with just about everything. ive been through a few phases and its all about practise, relaxing and growing imo
all i can advise is dont overthink the hug style :haha: , go with your instincts for the length and tightness of the hug, you should be able to read off the other person. go with the flow. you may feel awkward but remember, (this is something i got off an anxiety commercial which im always trying to drum into my head)... "what you're thinking, isnt what they're thinking". so just try to relax. hugs can be awesome especially if its someone you are comfortable with. i hope to get back to really feeling that too. my fav hugs right now for sure are internet hugs and my dog hugs, but i will get better again, and i hope you can learn to embrace them more too

It's not that I don't like hugs, I'm just not mentally prepared for the fact someone could hug me and it ends up... well, like this:
