Computer Things

Postby Nick Blade (187030201) » Fri Nov 23, 2018 6:06 pm

I'll try to keep this updated as much as my time allows me to.
The thread follows no particular specifics as long as the posts are tech/computer related.

I use Mac OS X the most because I'm working or studying pretty much all the time.
And I bring my old laptop out with Windows 7 if all I'm gonna do is watch Netflix or be on FB and stuff like that.
Et tu, Brute?

That looks like an expensive toy... $599.00
But from i just watched on YouTube the technology is very interesting and wow it can pick up the finest details in real time.

Mac users can use a small app called Mac2Imgur which sits on your Menubar and you can upload images straight from your desktop without needing to open your browser at all.

Liquid Nitrogen cooling is probably the coolest thing you can do to your computer, sadly for me that's not gonna be consumer ready any time soon.

But Wow! Operating a computer with a CPU temperature of -120 degrees.

Are processors pushing up against the limits of physics?

Very soon CPU upgrades will no longer be "Faster" but more power efficient since we have hit physics limitations and can no longer go smaller than we already have.

physics and materials science set a lot of the limits for the hardware, math places some limitations on what we can do with it. And despite its reputation, the limits on math are also much fuzzier than the ones provided by physics. For example, we still don't even know the answer to the P vs NP question despite years of effort. And even though we can prove certain algorithms are the most efficient for general cases, it's also easy to find ranges of problems where alternative computational approaches perform better.

Intel and AMD will have to figure out how to add more cores to their CPUs and focus on power efficiency rather than speed and performance which have been their primary marketing for decades.

Your porn has to be the most intense downloads in the history of the web to need all that cooling....

:haha:

This is often done when overclocking just to break benchmark records, some CPUs can go as high as 7GHZ on all cores. Liquid Nitrogen cooling doesn't last long before condensation starts and ruins the components so what they do is actually heat up the socket instead of cooling it to remove all kinds of wetness then start freezing again, when they got it to 7.25GHZ the temperature had to be -170 otherwise the system would just crash or throttle instantly. Cooler temps = higher overclocking, VERY cool temperature will leave you with a card-box instead of a motherboard. Watching things like that makes my computer look like a potato. I can't believe those people mess with components worth thousands of dollars just to break records, it only takes one wrong voltage fraction and it fries your CPU.

My brother is the CIO of a school district here in my town. When he was 9 years old he uninstalled a broken ceiling fan, tore it apart to test each component and rewire the thing, and then reassembled it without it burning down the house or ever breaking again. He built his first computer when he was 13 using components he salvaged from Radio Shack's trash cans. He was making robots by the time he was 15 and burning up processors one after the other like they were popcorn. Now he spends all day keeping teenagers from googling "boobs". LOLOLOL

But he told me that the new processors running on particle theory will be here within the decade. Laying the 1s and 0s on the atoms has already been done. And all it takes is some method of regulating how consistent that atomic arrangement can be made. He expects laptops and desktops the size of a phone to follow. Cooling will be a memory then and power use almost nil. IDK if he was trying to impress or scare me.

If you guys like to Yo and browse the forums or watch YouTube and play Yo at the same time you can get this Chrome extension called Tab Resize or something similar, there are plenty of extensions that do just that. This is helpful when you're doing sales and it gets boring but also sometimes people show up and u may miss them if you're busy posting or watching videos about cats.
